This is a system that allows all people with public insurance to receive the same medical treatment for the same amount of money at any medical institution across the country.

Co-payment
By presenting your health insurance card, you can receive medical treatment at the following percentage copayment (depending on your age). Treatment equipment, meals and clothing required during your time in the hospital are not covered.
- 0 to under 6 years old (before compulsory education): 20%
- Between 6 to under 70 years old: 30%
- 70 years or older to under 75 years old: 20% (30% for those still receiving income comparable to the current workforce)
- 75 years and over: 10% (20%30% for those still receiving income comparable to current workforce)
*There are cases that additional costs would add depends on the places if outside of office hours or night time medical service.
*Additional cost below will be added on top of consultation fee when you go to a big hospital that has more than 200 beds to see a doctor without your letter of introduction.
The first visit: The time you visit for the first time because of you are sick and you want to visit (includes appointment) more than 5,000yen (more than 3,000yen for dentists)
Return to the place: When you visit there again on a setting date and time by doctor's instructions. More than 2,500yen (more than 1,500 yen for dentists)

If you use treatments or medicines that are not approved by the Ministry of Health, Labor and/or Welfare departments, you will be responsible for all 100% of your medical costs, including treatments usually covered by insurance.
